| Summary | 0000696: pgpool connection caching issue | ||||
| Description | Hi, In pgpool logs we are keep getting following error connection exists but startup packet length is not identical creating new connection to backend Please can you let us know how to resolved this issue , because of this pgpool process are keep creating new connection and not having the connection pool with DB | ||||

# pgPool-II configuration file

#
# This file consists of lines of the form:
#
# name = value
#
# Whitespace may be used. Comments are introduced with "#" anywhere on a line.
# The complete list of parameter names and allowed values can be found in the
# pgPool-II documentation.
#
# This file is read on server startup and when the server receives a SIGHUP
# signal. If you edit the file on a running system, you have to SIGHUP the
# server for the changes to take effect, or use "pgpool reload". Some
# parameters, which are marked below, require a server shutdown and restart to
# take effect.

The error indicates that your client tries to connect to Pgpool-II with different parameter each time (but with same database and user name). I rarely see this error and I guess there's something unusual with your client program. Can you elaborate more? |
Hi t-ishii We have client with one DB user and one DB All client use same user/DB What all parameter pgpool in comparison ? |
> What all parameter pgpool in comparison ? Pgpool-II compares startup message described here: https://www.postgresql.org/docs/13/protocol-message-formats.html See "StartupMessage (F)" section. As you can see the message includes user name , database name and (optionally) "options". Since the user name and the database name are identical, I guess the only difference is the "options" part. "replication" part is not used by ordinary database applications. |
By the way what is the PostgreSQL version and what kind of application language do you use? |
All our client are using same DB parameter such as DBname, DBuser and password and appicatioin name is always blank but we have clients in c++ and python hence they are using different underlying driver such as libpq, Unix ODBC. "The error indicates that your client tries to connect to Pgpool-II with different parameter each time" - How can i check all parameter that the client is using to connect the pgpool , Is this information available in the logs ? Which all parameters, if different, can trigger this log? (connection exists but startup packet length is not identical) |
> Which all parameters, if different, can trigger this log? Any parameter as long as it's length is different. > How can i check all parameter that the client is using to connect the pgpool , Is this information available in the logs ? No. Maybe you can use wireshark to look into the startup message. |
Attached is a patch to V4.2 to debug out the contents of startup packet (requires DEBUG1 enabled). Hope this helps. startup_packet_v4.2.diff (553 bytes)
