[pgpool-general: 6333] FATAL: 08P01: expected password response, got message type 88

Hi,
we are trying to run pgpool 4.0.2 on Ubuntu 18.04..
When trying to login to Postgres 9.5 or 11  via pgpool, Postgres logs the error “FATAL:  08P01: expected password response, got message type 88”
Direct login to the DB with the same user works fine.
Did anymore come across this error or has any hints on what to try?
