So my understanding is in replication mode pgpool will write updates to all configured PostgreSQL clusters. IN master/slave mode pgpool will write all changes to the master PostgreSQL cluster and then the master/slave config in PostgreSQL will handle writing to all slaves..

Multi master is every PostgreSQL cluster can write to every other PostgreSQL cluster.
