I'm hitting a similar issue with the same error.  We've determined that when PGPool is run with load_balancing ON we see that error and the app fails. There may be more at issue here, but if we turn load_balancing OFF, the error (and application issues) disappear.

Any possibility of a release to fix?

Ya, I just hit this bug.  It happens when the lowest-numbered active backend is not the master.  Check out pool_read_kind() in auth/pool_auth.c; the logic in that case is totally broken.
