[pgpool-general: 5040] FATAL: failed to read kind from backend

I upgraded pgpool to 3.5.4 now getting this error

2016-10-10 13:19:59: pid 18764: HINT:  check data consistency among db nodes

Our setup using a streaming replication with 2 pgpool hosts using watchdog
2 pgpool hosts
Ubuntu 14.04.5
pgpool-II version 3.5.4
2 postgres hosts
PostgreSQL 9.5.4
