This is an expected behavior if a) you haven't started pgpool-II yet
b) no PostgreSQL backend is running, or c) your UNIX domain socket dir
setting is incorrect (check socket_dir in pgpool.conf).

If you have another case, please let us know.

BTW the fix you made to nodeStatus.php is already in git repository.
