I tried this version out (just the patch, not the full HEAD), and it does 
get past the point where it locked up before.  Thanks for the suggestion. 
I'll do some more testing now that I know the basic problem is corrected.

Can you offer a suggestion:  is it better to use just that patch, or to 
grab the whole CVS HEAD?  How stable is the code in CVS right now?

Since this is a pretty serious bug (based on the fact that it keeps 
getting reported to the list), I think many people would be happy if this 
correction made its way out of CVS and into an official release.  I wonder 
how many others are running into this and just giving up on it, which 
hurts the reputation of the project.
