Summary0000137: Too much memory consumption by PgPool process
DescriptionI'm using PgPool-II 3.4 to apply replication and load balance in two PostgreSql Servers.

After start the system we notice that Pgpool start increasing the memory consumption until no system Ram memory is available.

Here is the list of pgpool process having huge amount of memory:

11840 root 20 0 12.929g 3.368g 25288 S 3.0 43.5 3:58.40 java
11698 root 20 0 641152 596888 2792 S 0.0 7.3 0:04.83 pgpool
11689 root 20 0 566280 519892 2856 S 0.0 6.4 0:04.53 pgpool
11680 root 20 0 409996 365692 2788 S 0.0 4.5 0:02.94 pgpool
11707 root 20 0 410192 361096 2788 S 0.0 4.4 0:03.06 pgpool
11703 root 20 0 377252 335064 2856 S 0.0 4.1 0:02.89 pgpool
11715 root 20 0 319064 274828 2856 S 0.3 3.4 0:02.41 pgpool
11750 root 20 0 269972 223440 2856 S 0.0 2.7 0:02.24 pgpool
11699 root 20 0 261592 217352 2856 S 0.0 2.7 0:01.89 pgpool

The values above start low and increase constantly as long the java application queries the database.

Is this a memory leak probleam?

Here is our pgpool.conf

# ----------------------------
# pgPool-II configuration file
# ----------------------------
#
# This file consists of lines of the form:
#
# name = value
#
# Whitespace may be used. Comments are introduced with "#" anywhere on a line.
# The complete list of parameter names and allowed values can be found in the
# pgPool-II documentation.
#
# This file is read on server startup and when the server receives a SIGHUP
# signal. If you edit the file on a running system, you have to SIGHUP the
# server for the changes to take effect, or use "pgpool reload". Some
# parameters, which are marked below, require a server shutdown and restart to
# take effect.

Perform a monitoring using the top (M to sort by memory consumption).

Wait for some minutes.

Notice that the pgpool process keep getting memory from system.

Hi

Thanks for reporting the problem, What is the exact version of pgpool-II you are using. I have tried with the current head of 3_4 which is pgpool-II 3.4.2 and it is not producing any memory leak. I have used the same configurations shared by you and pgpool-II is running for more than an hour and the memory usage is very consistent.

There was a memory leak reported and fixed a few months back in pgpool-II 3.4 (http://git.postgresql.org/gitweb/?p=pgpool2.git;a=commitdiff;h=8c2639b68dc482761b6f375c25d094d8aad2b796), So if you are using the initial version of 3_4 probably that fix is not part of the binary you are using.

Thanks

Hi.

The problem reported in ticket can be easily reproduced in Pgpool-II-3.4.0

Yesterday I tried the version 3.1.1, leave the application running during the night and no memory problem has been noticed.

Today morning I installed the last stable version (3.4.2) and up to now no problem with this version as well.

May be this could be a specific pgpool-II-3.4.0 problem.

However, I' gonna keep monitoring the performance during the day.

Thank in advanced

Thanks for the prompt reply. Yes, there is a known memory leak issue in pgpool-II 3.4.0 which was fixed in later versions.

The reported memory leak is already fixed in the current version pgpool-II 3.4.2.
