[pgpool-general: 2963] Show commands not working

On the  webpage: http://www.pgpool.net/docs/latest/pgpool-en.html about 1/2 down into the page, there is a section for SHOW commands like pool_status, etc., and on my system none 
of these are working. I just get an error message when I enter them into psql.

I've probably missed installing some things as I'm not using pgpool for all tasks, but I cannot tell what I've missed that would add this functionality into the system.

Any ideas?
